Self-Catering Holiday Cottage, Scotland

Comments from our visitors

“We’ve been all over the place during our stay. Highlights (although every day was great) are Ardwell Bay (although the road down is interesting!), Galloway Forest Park (otter pool and wild goat park especially), Mull of Galloway and Corsewall Point. We’ve enjoyed lots of drinks and cakes out and about and our favourites were The Smithy in New Galloway and the café at Mull of Galloway – it really is coffee with a view. It’s going to be disappointing next week when I have to get up and there are no rabbits or cows to watch. We’ve seen so many different birds, a deer, hare, rabbits, goats and all for free. The RSPB in Yorkshire charge to get a good view of their gannets – not here! We will definitely have to come back as there are so many more places to see.

Thanks for letting us stay in your cottage, it is so peaceful and relaxing. We hope the next visitors enjoy it as much as we have.”

August 2019.

“Our 3rd visit coming on holiday and it never disappoints. A very relaxing holiday and also a very busy holiday for our 2 German Shepherds, Taz and Iggy – all the smells and sounds and going to the beach every day – omg! If the weather is a bit wet and windy just get in the car and drive to one of the many beautiful places along the coast towards Isle of Whithorn or towards Ayr past Loch Ryan.”

August 2019.

“So where to begin to summarise one of the best holidays we’ve ever had? We ‘ummed and arred’ for such a long time before booking a week in a part of the country we’d never visited before. All the positive reviews certainly helped make our minds up. If this one does the same for someone else that would be great. From our arrival at the cottage we all settled into a lovely relaxed pace of life, so much so the list of things to do has only been partially ticked off. Fantastic cottage, fantastic location, fantastic time! We’ll have to come back now to tick off a few more things.”

July 2019.

“It’s the little touches that make a great holiday cottage brilliant and this has them. The welcome pack, the message on the board, the note about the truck rally… I could go on. We have spotted so many birds including kestrel and buzzards. 2 deer appeared one evening and on the last night we watched 2 barn owls hunting. Plenty to do in the area regardless of the weather. A thoroughly relaxing holiday, couldn’t wish for more.”

July 2019.

“This is the best cottage we’ve ever stayed in and we’ve stayed in quite a few. We’ve been coming here for many years and the standard is as high today as it was the first time we came here and so dog friendly. Thank you for all the lovely treats you left us and for all the lovely things you do around the cottage that makes our holiday special. We’ve enjoyed every minute.”

June 2019.

“Despite a rather wet and windy week we have thoroughly enjoyed our 2nd visit to Kirklauchline Cottage. Just like last year we found relaxation in the peaceful surroundings that we were wanting. A lovely day at Castle Kennedy which turned out to be the best day of the week (weather-wise). We enjoyed walks at Sandhead, Wig Bay and Kirroughtree.

The cottage is just as magical and we feel it calling us back even before we leave! Thanks for the welcome pack and the roses and your hospitality. Looking forward to next time.”

May 2019.

“Another wonderful week. The cottage and area have such lovely vibes. Wildlife is amazing. We were visited in the middle of the day by a large fox. Rabbits around here are so cheeky. Again been so lucky with the weather. Already looking forward to a return trip. You have a wonderful cottage here, real home from home. Thank you again.”

May 2019.

“Fantastic cottage, cosy and comfortable with amazing views and in a quiet position. We’ve had a great week – all seasons in the same week weather-wise but had some lovely walks around Portpatrick and Isle of Whithorn. Been coming to this area for 25 years now so will definitely be back.”

April 2019.

“Marvellous cottage, couldn’t have asked for any better. The welcome package was a brilliant touch. Maps and guide books a great asset to finding where to go. Dogs had a great time on all the lovely walks. Will definitely recommend to others and will be back.”

April 2019.

“Well what a windy week! Nevertheless we have managed to get out and about – two lovely walks in the Galloway Forest Park (Glen Trool our favourite) and a wet and windy walk along Sandhead beach. The sun came out for our drive down to the Mull of Galloway – just amazing! Spectacular views and we had the walk around the lighthouse all to ourselves! Tasty lunch at Tigh Na Mara and even tastier lunch at Old Colfin Creamery (yummy soup).

But the best bit… is knowing we were driving back to a warm, cosy and relaxing cottage with everything we could need. Maddie and Bramble have slept the evenings away in front of the fire. Thank You for everything.

PS: Labelling the OS maps is a brilliant idea and the dressing gowns.”

Mr and Mrs C, Maddie and Bramble the cocker spaniels, Merseyside. March 2019.

“What an absolutely amazing and thoroughly blissed out time we’ve had. Exactly what was needed. Going home feeling so relaxed and refreshed. Hector had so much fun exploring the harbour and meeting so many wonderful people. Thank you.”

Miss K and Hector, miniature english bull terrier, Bury. January 2019.

“Thank You Alison, Dave and Bob for another super break in your lovely, cosy cottage. New Years Eve was blissfully quiet with no fireworks and New Years Day brought us dolphins at the Mull of Galloway and a shooting star from the decking. What a perfect way to start 2019. Thank You.”

“Thank you for a wonderful relaxing stay in your beautiful warm, cosy and so well appointed cottage. We all had a fantastic time thank you for being so thoughtful with the message to us on the chalkboard, the welcome pack, toiletries and other supplies are so welcome especially milk for cuppa. What more can I say a great unwind in the beautiful wilderness.”

The M family, York. October 2018.

“Thanks for a warm and comfortable cottage. A cosy hideaway from both storm Helena and storm Ali. The weather has been dramatic and the coastline impressive in the windy conditions. Had a great wee first time to Galloway. We will certainly come back.”

Mr and Mrs P, Northumberland. September 2018.

“What a lovely cottage. Everything you could need including goodies. Had a change of weather almost every day. We have had a great holiday thank you. PS: lovely message on chalk board.”

Mr and Mrs C, Roxy & Perry the dachshunds, Preston. September 2018.

“What can we say that has not been said many times in this book? Very little so we will say it all again! This is our first visit but we have found Kirklauchline to be a fantastic, and to us, a magical place. We came looking for somewhere that offered us something special to recharge our jaded and depleted batteries and we found it. We wanted somewhere to chill out and Alison had promised that this was the place and it lived up to our highest hopes. We arrived eventually having navigated through fog that reduced visibility to 5 yards or less with the help (hindrance) of the sat nav that apparently wanted us to take the scenic route. We arrived with initially relief and then delight to discover that Kirklauchline Cottage exceeded our hopes and expectations and was warm and welcoming after our journey. We have loved every minute of every day here and will leave smiling. Our memories will be of Portpatrick, Caste Kennedy, Ardwell Beach, Killantringan, Sandhead, Glenwhan and the various walks and tea rooms there. Carla the westie loved all the walks especially on the beaches. Will we return? You bet!”

J, M and Cara the westie, Forfar. September 2018.

“Third time at this fabulous cottage. So comfortable and homely. Had a lovely week and Ellis had a ball. We are not sad because it’s over we are smiling because it’s happened. Looking forward to next year. x”

The Y family, Ellis the border collie, Hamilton. August 2018.

“Another fantastic week up at Kirklauchline Cottage. Our 4th visit and we still love it here, thank you Alison and Dave.”

Mr and Mrs C, Ezzy and Ferris the weimaraners, Nottingham. August 2018.

“This is the best cottage we have ever been to. Mine and my sister’s room is the biggest room we’ve ever stayed in. There are some lovely walks along the beach and I think our little puppy Freya really enjoyed herself. This was her first holiday cottage she has ever stayed in. Thank you so much for the lovely stay and the little message on the chalkboard. Olive the bigger sister.”

The C family, York. August 2018.

“This was our first visit to this wonderful cottage and to Portpatrick. Everything was perfect. Alison and Dave have thought of every detail in making this home from home. We felt instantly welcome and Sammy settled in within minutes, which was wonderful to see. We had some fantastic days exploring and then coming back to this cosy cottage was so lovely. The treats and lovely blackboard message was so special. Sammy loved his cow neighbours too. Thank you for all these special memories.”

Mr and Mrs B, Sammy the dog, West Yorkshire. July 2018.

“Our first visit we had an amazing week. Cottage is lovely and has everything we would ever need. We thoroughly enjoyed visiting various beaches, Ardwell bay was by far our favourite but a very bumpy road down. We had a lovely meal in the sun at the Crown in Portpatrick and we can’t believe how dog friendly Portpatrick is. We especially loved spotting the basking shark. We had a lovely time. Thank you so much for letting us stay.”

Mr and Mrs B, Magnus & Rebus the golden retrievers, Falkirk. July 2018.

“Our 2nd visit and not disappointed. Really lovely break away. Weather on our side. We will be back, thank you for all the goodies.”

D, R, Beau the collie cross and Millie the cairn terrier, North Yorkshire. June 2018.

“Our first time visiting this fab cottage but been to Portpatrick on many occasions. We did not realise there was so much more to see and do. The maps, hints and tips of places to visit were great. Also the cottage itself was amazing and very well equipped with plenty of thoughtful touches. Weather 26 degrees all week, views and peace and quiet here were stunning. As was the abundance of wildlife including hares and badgers. Thanks so much.”

MC family, Glasgow. June 2018.

“We’ve had another lovely two weeks here at this delightful cottage. We absolutely love it here and aren’t ready to go home yet. We always discover something new each time we come here. This year it’s Logan Bakehouse. They don’t have a shop but you can email an order to them by Wednesday and they will bring your order to Sandhead (10 minute drive) between 10 to 10.30 on Friday. We met them in the picnic car park. They sell real bread and delicious pastries. Thanks Alison and Dave for everything. See you next year.”

Mr and Mrs H, Finn the flat coated retriever, Middleborough. June 2018.

“Weather stunning all week but it’s the beauty of this place that makes it special. Thank you for your many thoughtful touches – the food and local beer was sublime. Loved the OS map and book ( I bought one on your recommendation – so many places to see, do need to return) and the bird books and binoculars. Amazed at such varied and abundant wildlife, the peace, quality of light, air and water and in summer yet so few people around. Everyone so friendly too. Freya was giddy with joy on the beaches and in the sea every day. Want to come back for some dark sky star gazing with a furry companion Freya to keep my toes warm. Thank you for a place I don’t want to leave.”

J, S with Freya the boxer, Leeds. June 2018.

“Beautiful cottage in a stunning location. We were very lucky with the weather and enjoyed Sandhead beach, the Galloway Lighthouse and Botanic Garden. Port Pantry in Portpatrick is the best place we found for food.”

The H family with Maggie the sprocker spaniel, Cheshire. May 2018.

“Very comfortable cottage. The Logan Bakehouse biscuits were delicious. Three standouts – sitting in the sun at Portpatrick, Logan Botanic Garden and Killantringan Bay (even managed a paddle there). Of course the glorious weather helped but it has been a very relaxing and enjoyable stay seeing places we previously knew nothing about.”

Mr and Mrs H, Cardiff. May 2018.

“What an amazing week! Sunshine every day. Your cottage is just perfect and what a peaceful location. So many wonderful beaches- we liked Killantringan Bay best of all. Portpatrick is a beautiful little gem. Port Logan bay and Mull of Galloway Lighthouse with wonderful coffee shop which serves main meals at a very reasonable cost are well worth the visit. Seen hares, deer, rabbit, various seabirds and I can’t believe how many very happy calves there are around here. Very sad to be leaving but as Arnie said ‘we’ll be back’. Best wishes to you. X”

Mr and Mrs W with Ollie the staffie and Sammy jack russell, Telford. May 2018.

“Our 3rd visit to this lovely cottage and stunning area. Thank you as always for the treats on arrival. Weather has been mixed and never seen so much sea mist. Look out for the 3 roe deer behind the cottage along with hares, rabbits and beautiful calves that appear daily. Saw fallow deer in the road on the way to Aldouran Wetland Garden near Leswalt. Lovely drive along the Queens Way (A712) with in the Galloway Forest and saw 4 red deer at the deer range. Revisited the Raider’s Road and Otter Pool on the way to Laurieston to see the red kites. Our favourite spots on the Rhins are Lady Bay, Wig Bay walk and Mull of Galloway. Chloe loved the RSPB Wood of Cree. Thank you.x”

Mr and Mrs Mc and Ozzy the cockapoo, Maybole. September 2017.

“What to say about Galloway? Nothing other than fabulous! Can’t believe not visited this beautiful part of the country before now. Even 2 weeks isn’t enough to explore everything so a return trip must be organised. The dogs had plenty of woodland/forestry walks as well as runs on beaches and coastal paths to explore. Highlights were woodlands: Wood of Cree, an RSPB managed woodland near Newton Stewart, Carstramon wood, a Scottish wildlife woodland 3 miles north of Gatehouse of Fleet. Beaches: Sandhead, Ardwell Bay (on the west side of the Rhins) and Port Logan. Mull of Galloway lighthouse and a climb to the top well worth a visit. The Gavin Maxwell Memorial just beyond Monreith is a must. Thanks to Alison and Dave for providing a lovely cottage to stay in and chill out in at the end of the day as well as the thoughtful welcoming goodies for humans and dogs too! Wonderful.”

N and Rosie and Maggie the labradors, Ullapool. September 2017.

“We’ve had a lovely fortnight in this lovely cottage and have done lots of exploring. Favourite beach was definitely Ardwell Bay (seals very close to the beach). Visited Logan Fish Pond – brilliant. Logan Botanic Gardens were beautiful and the food in the Potting Shed highly recommended. The lighthouse and RSPB at the Mull of Galloway are not to be missed.  Wigtown is great for book lovers. 7 stanes at Kirroughtree is a mountain bikers dream. Loads to do, hope to return again one day. Xxx”

The F family and Paddy the westie, Lancashire. August 2017.

“We’ve enjoyed another wonderful stay at Kirklauchline, 5 years on from our first visit and have found it as peaceful and magical as our first. The baby bunnies, cheeky cows, hares, birds and deer surrounding the cottage are always entertaining. The views out of the windows are stunning. So helpful to have so much provided and no need to bring so much up on our drive here. We had a lovely meal at Henry’s bar in Stranraer, Port Pantry and Crown Hotel in Portpatrick. Plenty of woodland walks in the local area and at Galloway Forest, beach completely all to ourselves at Ardwell Bay and Port Logan with fantastic coastal drive down to Mull of Galloway with amazing views from the lighthouse and café there. When the sun shines the views from the cottage cannot be beaten and we saw some beautiful sunsets and sunrises. We wish we’d booked two weeks as we don’t want to leave! See you again soon. xxxx”

The F Family, Derbyshire. July/August 2017.

It’s been amazing and well defiantly be back. Thanks for the lovely welcome treats for us and the pooches too. Xx”

All the things done to the cottage have enhanced it, so well done Alison, Dave and especially Abiidoodle! New things this year Carstramon wood near Gatehouse of Fleet – fabulous bluebells and lots of birds, Glenwhan Gardens at Dunragit (amazing place) and the walk from the cottage to Cairngarroch. Lovely bay and walk down. Saw an adder in Torrs Warren – it hissed at Sian and at me! No red squirrels this time though but a lovely walk with lots of birds. Another lovely week.”

“What a beautiful and tranquil setting. We were all immediately comfortable and relaxed. Couldn’t wish for better accommodation. Found some great places and walks thanks to the books here. Unusually for Scotland (in our experience) the weather was good. So enjoyed a few chilling drinks on the deck. Loved Portpatrick and excellent walking at Wig Sands opposite Cairnryan. Lovely to make acquaintance with the toads. Dogs more interested in the rabbits and calves who like to walk up the lane. Put bread out and good bird response at the feeder. Red deer up the lane and red squirrel in the woods near Portpatrick. Thank you for creating such a memorable experience.”

“Thank you so much to Alison and Dave for the cottage being equipped with everything we could need for a fabulous, relaxing week. The view of the sea is like a picture postcard and we have been entertained by by the quirky cows and spectacular wildlife. As others have said keep a camera to hand as we have had several surprise visits from rabbits, deer, and even a fox! The OS map was very useful as was the other info provided – the Yorkshire version of monopoly was a great touch! We would definitely recommend a visit to the fishing town of Portpatrick and had an excellent meal in The Crown. The Mull of Galloway is also not to be missed! The potential sightings of dolphins and puffins but also the delicious home-baked desserts make it worthwhile. It is not our first visit and won’t be our last to the area. xx”

“Thank you Alison and Dave for your beautiful cottage. We knew it was going to be lovely but WOW!! There is nothing you haven’t thought about and we could not have wished for anything more – well maybe a bit of sunshine but you can’t have everything! Portpatrick is still a little gem and I spent many summers there on holiday with my family as a child and it hasn’t really changed in the past 30 years. Benson has loved Sandhead Beach and Mossyard. Cream O’ Galloway is a lovely place if just for the ice-cream and the food at The Crown is fantastic. We have stayed in a few cottages but this is by far the best. We will be back next year. Can we book the sun too? x”

“We haven’t moved far from the cottage this year due to Bridie’s poorly leg but we have enjoyed every minute. Such a wonderful relaxing holiday. The cottage is excellent as always and the attention to detail is second to none. Such a beautiful area. We love this place so much we just keep on coming back. Thanks Alison and Dave for making us so welcome. See you next year. xxxx”

“Thank you Alison and Dave for another fabulous week! Galloway certainly turns up trumps with the weather for us. The coast walk to Portpatrick was absolutely cracking, so was the Portpatrick Brewery Beer in the Crown afterwards! We love your cottage and the care you put into it – the new porch is brilliant. Sian really enjoys herself on the beaches and in the sea, so she says thank you as well – a very polite dog! We shall be back…..”

“Our third visit and hopefully not our last. We’ve enjoyed ourselves very much. It’s been a very much needed break and pleased to say it’s done the trick! Managed to get Jock on a couple of lovely beaches so that was enjoyable for us all. Seen more wildlife this time – a deer (twice) and a weasel/stoat by the bird table. Lovely meals at Tigh Na Mara again. Kirklauchline – Excellent, as ever!! thanks very much Alison, Dave and AbiiDoodle. xxx”
