Comments from our visitors
“What to say about Galloway? Nothing other than fabulous! Can’t believe not visited this beautiful part of the country before now. Even 2 weeks isn’t enough to explore everything so a return trip must be organised. The dogs had plenty of woodland/forestry walks as well as runs on beaches and coastal paths to explore. Highlights were woodlands: Wood of Cree, an RSPB managed woodland near Newton Stewart, Carstramon wood, a Scottish wildlife woodland 3 miles north of Gatehouse of Fleet. Beaches: Sandhead, Ardwell Bay (on the west side of the Rhins) and Port Logan. Mull of Galloway lighthouse and a climb to the top well worth a visit. The Gavin Maxwell Memorial just beyond Monreith is a must. Thanks to Alison and Dave for providing a lovely cottage to stay in and chill out in at the end of the day as well as the thoughtful welcoming goodies for humans and dogs too! Wonderful.”

“Another enjoyable week in this fab cottage. Thank you for all our welcome goodies. Great base to visit the surrounding area. Visited Isle of Whithorn, well worth a visit, lovely place. Already looking forward to returning next year to this homely cottage.”

“We’ve had a lovely fortnight in this lovely cottage and have done lots of exploring. Favourite beach was definitely Ardwell Bay (seals very close to the beach). Visited Logan Fish Pond – brilliant. Logan Botanic Gardens were beautiful and the food in the Potting Shed highly recommended. The lighthouse and RSPB at the Mull of Galloway are not to be missed. Wigtown is great for book lovers. 7 stanes at Kirroughtree is a mountain bikers dream. Loads to do, hope to return again one day. Xxx”

“We’ve enjoyed another wonderful stay at Kirklauchline, 5 years on from our first visit and have found it as peaceful and magical as our first. The baby bunnies, cheeky cows, hares, birds and deer surrounding the cottage are always entertaining. The views out of the windows are stunning. So helpful to have so much provided and no need to bring so much up on our drive here. We had a lovely meal at Henry’s bar in Stranraer, Port Pantry and Crown Hotel in Portpatrick. Plenty of woodland walks in the local area and at Galloway Forest, beach completely all to ourselves at Ardwell Bay and Port Logan with fantastic coastal drive down to Mull of Galloway with amazing views from the lighthouse and café there. When the sun shines the views from the cottage cannot be beaten and we saw some beautiful sunsets and sunrises. We wish we’d booked two weeks as we don’t want to leave! See you again soon. xxxx”
The F Family, Derbyshire. July/August 2017.
“Was so made up when we saw you had a cancellation for this week. Just knew we had to book it. Thank you so much for everything. The weather has been very kind to us, only raining in the evenings. Porpatrick is our favourite place in the world, been lovely just sat outside the Crown watching the world go by. Visited Isle of Whithorn, Port Logan, Ballantrae, Lady Bay. It’s been amazing and well defiantly be back. Thanks for the lovely welcome treats for us and the pooches too. Xx”

“Have thoroughly enjoyed our week at this fabulous cottage, great views and plenty of wildlife to see (misty loved the rabbits). OS map and other books helped to plan our many trips throughout the region. Loved the coastal drives, Sandhead Beach, Mull of Galloway, and Galloway Forest. Thanks for goodies/treats which Margaret will enjoy when she hits big 60 today (Friday) – pity about the rain, however weather during the rest of the week has been fab. First trip to this area and already looking forward to our next visit. Thanks for a lovely week.”

“Relaxing week, lovely cottage, very dog friendly. We all appreciated thoughtful treats, really informative map and a large selection of leaflets as a first visit to the area. The weather has been kind and we managed to enjoy beach outings, visits to lighthouses, gardens and a variety of walks – saw deer, buzzards, painted lady butterflies and coastal wild flowers. Many thanks.”

“What a lovely week! Sunshine all the way and a breeze to keep us cool as well. The silence and the pace of life is wonderful – that’s why we keep coming back. All the things done to the cottage have enhanced it, so well done Alison, Dave and especially Abiidoodle! New things this year Carstramon wood near Gatehouse of Fleet – fabulous bluebells and lots of birds, Glenwhan Gardens at Dunragit (amazing place) and the walk from the cottage to Cairngarroch. Lovely bay and walk down. Saw an adder in Torrs Warren – it hissed at Sian and at me! No red squirrels this time though but a lovely walk with lots of birds. Another lovely week.”
Mr and Mrs J and Sian the Red Collie, Cumbria. May 2017.
“Thank you for a wonderful and relaxing 2 weeks. The weather has been good if not windy at times! We discovered new beaches and walks – thanks for the tips. Broadsea Bay and Ardwell Bay are lovely and the roads down to them are now car friendly. Local walk from the cottage to a rocky beach at Cairngarroch Bay. Saw a male and female roe deer around the cottage. Also hares in the field. Numerous very cute baby rabbits under the bird feeder. Managed to get a visit to Ayr this time- lovely coast road journey with views of Ailsa Craig. Beautiful old buildings in Ayr. Revisited Gatehouse of Fleet and saw a red squirrel in Cally Woods. Fish supper in Kirkcudbright ate overlooking the bay near Borgue. We didn’t run into Gerard Butler but will look out for the film. Thank you for the Easter eggs and the loan of the cottage.”

The food at The Crown in Portpatrick was great value! The weather has been fab for this time of year too. Only sad not to have seen a red squirrel. Thanks again.”

“Fantastic week in a beautiful cottage. Loved the huge living area and the outside space with the kids. Been very lucky with the weather with only a couple of days with rain. Portpatrick lush as always but enjoyed a coastal drive to Ayr. Revisited Kirkcudbright and the wonderful Selkirk Arms Hotel for tea. Sandhead is worth a visit as is the walk to Dunskey from Portpatrick. Saw lots of wildlife – buzzards, hares, oyster catchers, guillemots, deer and jackdaws. A lovely week and we will be back!”

“What a lovely relaxing Christmas in this lovely cottage. Despite an appearance from storms Barbara and Connor we spent our days on the beach and walking the stunning coastline. We then made the most of the great facilities with cosy evenings in front of the fire. Thank you for all the Christmas treats, for us and Pip and for making the cottage very festive. This may be our first visit but I’m sure it won’t be our last.”

“This will be our third stay at the cottage and each time we leave having seen parts of D and G we’ve not seen before and leave fully relaxed and ready to head back to the capital. Had a lovely welcome as always with the goodies (thank you) and the cottage has been lovely. Ventured to Knockinaam Lodge for afternoon tea which is well worth the visit, seen many castles, and had great pub lunches in both Portpatrick and Sandhead. Mainly though have relaxed, read books and went for lovely walks. Already looking forward to coming back again! Thanks again. Xx”

Thoroughly enjoyable week in a part of Scotland we have never visited before. Fantastic weather. Dry and sunny all week. Visited the lighthouses at either end of the peninsula and the many sandy beaches on both sides. Found the map very useful and did walk number 9 from the Galloway Coast book. Thank you for all the treats (human and doggie).”

We sensed from the beginning this was going to be a great place to stay and so it has proved. Our highlights: Campbell’s for an anniversary meal, sunsets over Portpatrick, coastal walks, Logan Botanic Garden, Dunskey Garden scones!! Thank You.”

“What a beautiful and tranquil setting. We were all immediately comfortable and relaxed. Couldn’t wish for better accommodation. Found some great places and walks thanks to the books here. Unusually for Scotland (in our experience) the weather was good. So enjoyed a few chilling drinks on the deck. Loved Portpatrick and excellent walking at Wig Sands opposite Cairnryan. Lovely to make acquaintance with the toads. Dogs more interested in the rabbits and calves who like to walk up the lane. Put bread out and good bird response at the feeder. Red deer up the lane and red squirrel in the woods near Portpatrick. Thank you for creating such a memorable experience.”
Mr and Mrs S, Ziva and Kensi the Dobermans, South Yorkshire. July 2016
“We had a great week exploring the area including the Mull, climbing the Merrick, beaches we liked New England Bay. Botanic Garden and a day trip to Belfast to the Titanic Museum. Watch out for the toad who visits – it comes right up to the door! Fantastic cottage too – thank you.”
The J family, West Lothian. July 2016.
“Thank you so much to Alison and Dave for the cottage being equipped with everything we could need for a fabulous, relaxing week. The view of the sea is like a picture postcard and we have been entertained by by the quirky cows and spectacular wildlife. As others have said keep a camera to hand as we have had several surprise visits from rabbits, deer, and even a fox! The OS map was very useful as was the other info provided – the Yorkshire version of monopoly was a great touch! We would definitely recommend a visit to the fishing town of Portpatrick and had an excellent meal in The Crown. The Mull of Galloway is also not to be missed! The potential sightings of dolphins and puffins but also the delicious home-baked desserts make it worthwhile. It is not our first visit and won’t be our last to the area. xx”
The S family and Ozzy, West Yorkshire. July 2016.
“Thank you Alison and Dave for your beautiful cottage. We knew it was going to be lovely but WOW!! There is nothing you haven’t thought about and we could not have wished for anything more – well maybe a bit of sunshine but you can’t have everything! Portpatrick is still a little gem and I spent many summers there on holiday with my family as a child and it hasn’t really changed in the past 30 years. Benson has loved Sandhead Beach and Mossyard. Cream O’ Galloway is a lovely place if just for the ice-cream and the food at The Crown is fantastic. We have stayed in a few cottages but this is by far the best. We will be back next year. Can we book the sun too? x”
G, P and Benson, Salford. June 2016.

“Thank you Alison and Dave for another fabulous week! Galloway certainly turns up trumps with the weather for us. The coast walk to Portpatrick was absolutely cracking, so was the Portpatrick Brewery Beer in the Crown afterwards! We love your cottage and the care you put into it – the new porch is brilliant. Sian really enjoys herself on the beaches and in the sea, so she says thank you as well – a very polite dog! We shall be back…..”

“Our third visit and hopefully not our last. We’ve enjoyed ourselves very much. It’s been a very much needed break and pleased to say it’s done the trick! Managed to get Jock on a couple of lovely beaches so that was enjoyable for us all. Seen more wildlife this time – a deer (twice) and a weasel/stoat by the bird table. Lovely meals at Tigh Na Mara again. Kirklauchline – Excellent, as ever!! thanks very much Alison, Dave and AbiiDoodle. xxx”
