Highlights of 2013 at Kirklauchline Cottage

It’s that time of year again when we all sit back and reflect on the year that has almost ended. This year, 2013 has just flown by for us and has been a very busy time. We have met some wonderful people along the way and have welcomed new guests and returning guests to Kirklauchline Holiday Cottage throughout the year. It’s great to look back at photographs to remember what has happened along the way

Pet friendly holiday in GallowayJanuary saw a month when we closed Kirklauchline Cottage and began the task of decorating. We had a light dusting of snow during this month much to Abiidoodle’s delight!

February saw us opening to our first guests of the season, who stayed for a long weekend over Valentine’s Day. February is the time that our local gardens open their doors for the annual Scottish Snowdrop Festival.

March was quite a quiet month. We had some old friends stay at Kirklauchline Cottage and had a lovely catch up with them but towards the end of that month we experienced the worst snowstorms the area has had for around 50 years! We were without power for a few days and the snow drifts were unbelievable. Kirklauchline Cottage and the local area was actually cut off for a few days and local communities were out with tractors and diggers clearing the roads and moving tonnes and tonnes of snow.

Dumfries and Galloway Snow of 2013April saw the snow hanging around for a while, many of us thought with the enormity of it that it would be with us until June but it soon melted away and we were back to normal again. We had the Wild Spring Festival this month with lots of wildlife events throughout out the region to enjoy.

During May we were fully booked. One of the weeks we had returning guests who very kindly wrote us a blog about their walk from Kirklauchline into Portpatrick and back again. There was a wedding on board the Portpatrick Lifeboat when two of the crew members got married on board. It was a wonderful day, the weather was glorious and the Bride looked beautiful.

In June we had a cheeky Chaffinch who seemed determined to come inside. Our returning guests, who arrived on 22nd June named him “Fat Eric” and added to his growing waistline by giving him lots of suet balls and seeds. They even photographed him and all his friends who visited the bird feeders.

Honeymoon at Kirklauchline CottageWhat a month July was! We had our first ever Honeymoon couple, it was so exciting. They had a lovely week and left us a piece of their delicious wedding cake. They have actually booked again to stay with us for their first anniversary. July always sees the ever popular Portpatrick Lifeboat Week and this year was no exception, the crowds flocked to Portpatrick for this week long event.

August saw us fully booked again and the weather was lovely, perfect weather in the Rhins of Galloway and perfect for lots of walks on our local beaches, visits to Portpatrick and lots of walking.

During September we had Monty the Dog visit, he had been emailing AbiiDoodle prior to his visit and they were so looking forward to meeting each other.

During October we got a new map during from walking as our old faithful one was becoming tired and difficult to read! We also met Buster the Dog and he and AbiiDoodle had a fantastic time at Wig Bay running on the beach.

Christmas holiday in South West ScotlandNovember things started to slow down a bit and we even managed to get away for a few days ourselves.

December brings Christmas, crisp colder weather, winter sunshine, golden sunsets and cosy toes in front of the log burner.  Kirklauchline Cottage is always decorated with a tree, sparkly lights and we provide an extra special festive welcome basket for all our guests.

Merry Christmas to one and all and a very Happy New Year from Dave, Alison and AbiiDoodle. xx
