This access statement does not contain personal opinions as to our suitability for those with access needs, but aims to accurately describe the facilities and services that we offer all our guests/visitors.
Kirklauchline Cottage is ideal for those who want a quiet relaxing self catering holiday with sea views and a rural location. The village of Portpatrick is only 3.5 miles away from Kirklauchline Cottage. Our cottage sleeps up to 4 people and has 2 bedrooms. Pets are welcome.
The building was built in the 1800’s as a Galloway Crofter’s Cottage and is all on a single level. The bedrooms are situated off the living area. The kitchen and bathroom are situated at the other end of the building off the open plan living area. We look forward to welcoming you. The nearest railway station is at Stranraer, 6 miles away from Kirklauchline Cottage. There are no local bus services from Kirklauchline Cottage. We do not offer a collection service. The main road outside the cottage is an uneven farm track with 2 cattle grids to cross. The nearest equipment hire shop is Aid 2 Ability,33 Bridge St, Girvan, KA26 9HH telephone 01465 715287. There is a Radar disabled toilet in Portpatrick at the harbour. There are 5 Radar accessible toilets in Stranraer – Agnew park pavilion (open during pavilion opening times), Hanover square car park, Port Rodie seafront, Stair Park (Summer) and Stranraer station.
Key Collection, Welcome and Car Parking
The key can be found in a key safe box on the wall inside the porch and the code to this will be given around two weeks prior to arrival. It can be arranged to for us to meet you at the cottage if necessary. Parking is available for two cars on the gravelled area at the front of the cottage. There is no parking on the farm track outside the cottage. The parking area is gravel from the car parking to the main entrance. There are no street lights. There is one outside light on the porch and a light inside the porch, both are on a dawn to dusk sensor.
Entrance to Property
There are 3 steps up from the gravel to the porch door. The door is 730mm / 29″ wide. There is no handrail. The internal door leading into the living area is 90 degrees to the outside door and there is a step up from the porch to the living area. This door is 750mm / 29.5″ wide. There is no handrail. The entrance is well lit with lights on a dawn to dusk sensor. The floor covering inside the porch is painted concrete. The depth of the porch is 1.5m and the width is 1m. The internal door leads into the open plan living and dining area.
Halls, Stairs, Landings, Passageways
We have two internal halls. The hall at the kitchen and bathroom end of the cottage is accessed from the dining area. The width of the doorway is 850mm / 33.5″ with a small step. The floor covering in this hall is quarry tiled. This hall is 850mm / 33.5″ wide and 1550mm / 61.5 deep. The bathroom doorway is immediately in front of this door way. The kitchen doorway is at 90 degrees to the doorway that leads from the dining area. This hall is lit by means of natural light and a ceiling light during hours of darkness. At the other end of the building there is a doorway accessed from the living area. This is 650mm / 25.5″ wide and leads to the two bedrooms. This hall is lit by way of natural light and a ceiling pendant light during hours of darkness. The floor covering is medium pile carpet. This hall is 1m / 39″ wide and 1700mm / 67″ deep.
The open plan living and dining room is entered from the porch, with one step up. The door opening from the porch is 750mm / 29.5″. This room has 2 sofas with non feather cushions, low coffee tables, dining table and chairs and a sideboard. Furniture can be moved if necessary. There is a widescreen TV with remote control and subtitles. There is a DVD player on the bottom shelf of the TV stand (this can be moved if necessary). There is a mini hifi on the sideboard with radio, CD player and connector for MP3 player. Lighting is by means of natural daylight from the front south west facing windows. By night there are table lamps around the room as well as overhead pendant lighting. The flooring is solid oak. There is a medium pile rug at the living room end of the room. There are 3 vertical radiators, controlled by oil fired central heating and 2 multi fuel stoves. The dining area is the other end of the same room. Same entry door from the porch. The dining table has legs on each corner and is 640mm / 25″ from the floor to the under space of the table. There is free space around the table. The chairs are all movable – there are 4 chairs with padded seats and no arms. Lighting is by means of natural daylight from the front south west facing windows. By night there are table lamps around the room as well as overhead pendant lighting controlled by dimmer switches. The flooring is solid oak.
The kitchen is situated via a small step from the hall, which is accessed from dining room end of the open plan living space. The kitchen doorway is 700mm / 28″. The door of the oven drops down and the handle is 850mm / 33.5″ from the floor. The electric hob is 920mm / 36″ above the floor. The worktop and sink are 920mm / 36″ from the floor. There is a mixer tap at the kitchen sink with a separate hot and cold control to twist on and off. There is no table in the kitchen. Glasses and crockery can be moved from wall cupboards to lower cupboards if required, please request this when booking. The electric cordless kettle rotates 360 degrees. The kitchen is evenly lit with natural daylight and ceiling spotlights and there are lights on the cooker hood, above the hob. The floor is quarry tiled.
Bedrooms and Sleeping Areas
There are 2 bedrooms on ground level. One with a double bed and the other with twin divan beds. The doorway of the double bedroom is directly opposite the doorway leading from the living area. The double bedroom door width is 700mm / 28″. The doorway to the twin bedroom is at 90 degrees to the doorway that leads from the living area. The twin bedroom door is 720mm / 28.5″. Furniture can be moved around in both bedrooms if required. The height of the double bed from the floor to the top of the mattress is 480mm / 19″ and the height of the twin beds from the floor to the top of the mattress is 510mm / 20″. Lighting is by natural daylight and at night there are pendant ceiling lights in each room. The front and back bedrooms have 2 bedside lamps in each room. Medium pile carpet in both bedrooms. No TV in either bedroom.
Bathrooms, Shower-rooms and Toilets
Neither bedroom has en suite facilities. The Bathroom is at the opposite end of the building to the bedrooms. There is step free access from the inner hall into the bathroom. The doorway is 630mm / 25″ wide. There is a bath with shower over the bath and glass shower screen. The height of the bath is 560mm / 22″. There are no grab rails. There is no shower seat. The toilet is 420mm / 17″ high from the floor. We do not have seat raisers. The wash basin is 830mm / 32.5″ high from floor level. There is no clear space underneath the wash basin as it is situated on top of built in furniture. There are lever mixer taps on both the bath and the wash basin. There are ceiling spotlights in the bathroom, operated by a pull cord. The floor is lino.
The garden is mainly gravel with an area of raised decking with 2 steps up from the gravel. The gravel area is undulating and there are 2 steps from the gravel to the decking. Seating is available on the decking, where there is a picnic bench with fixed bench seating. There is a garden seat on another small decked area. The width of the walk way from the gravel to the main area of decking is 620mm / 24″ and there are 2 steps up to the main decking. There is an area of rockery with plants. The garden is accessed via farm gates from the farm track and there is stock proof fencing around the perimeter.
We do welcome trained assistance dogs. Floors are mid oak, medium fawn carpets or red quarry tiled in bathroom and kitchen, Walls are a light neutral colour, door frames are white, there is a light oak door from the porch to the living areas and the doors from the main living areas to the bedrooms and bathroom and kitchen are light blue. Mobile phone reception at the cottage is poor. We do have a land line telephone. We do have Broadband WIFI via satellite limited to 650MB per day. Power cuts are common in the whole area during periods of windy weather. Undercover storage outdoors for mobility scooters or electric wheel chairs is not possible due to a deep step from the decking to access the shed. The nearest general hospital with a minor injuries unit is 6 miles away in Stranraer and the nearest Doctors surgery is 4 miles away in Sandhead.
